Watch the sky,
read the datalink.

Every airliner overhead is broadcasting where it is and quietly texting its operator. Airwave Scan puts the traffic on a live map, decodes the datalink, and lets you listen to the controllers working it.

ADS-B

Every aircraft in range, live

Decode 1090 MHz and the sky fills in — each target on the map with the numbers that matter, updated second by second.

  • Position, altitude, heading & speed — plotted and moving, colored by signal.
  • Tap a track — callsign, registry, type and route where the datalink supplies it.
  • Location-aware — nearby airports and their frequencies come along for the ride.
  • Aviation charts — plot the live traffic over FAA VFR sectional, terminal, or IFR low/high base maps.

The messages between plane and airline

ACARS and VDL Mode 2 carry position reports, free-text, OOOI times and controller-pilot datalink — decoded and threaded into the feed.

  • ACARS & VDL Mode 2 — VHF datalink decoded on the Pi in real time.
  • CPDLC / ADS-C — controller-pilot messages and contract position reports, surfaced when present.
  • Novelty gems — an on-device classifier flags the unusual and interesting out of the routine chatter.

Listen to the controllers

The datalink tells you what; the voice tells you why. Tune the AM air band for the towers, approach and center sectors around you.

  • AM air-band receive — 118–137 MHz voice with squelch and gain to hand.
  • Nearby facilities — tower, ground, approach and ARTCC frequencies from the catalog.
  • Record a clip — capture a readback to a shareable file.

The interesting-message finder

Thousands of ACARS lines a day are noise. A built-in classifier — that you can teach — surfaces the gems: diversions, oddball free-text, and the messages worth a second look, and remembers them across restarts.

Your own flight tracker & datalink monitor

A 1090 MHz antenna and an RTL-SDR fill the map; a second dongle on the air band adds the voice. Both run on the same Pi.
